The services of the governor inform about dead fish in the stream into which foam flowed from extinguishing the fire of a construction warehouse in Krosno (Podkarpacie) and an alarming level of ammonia near the place of the fire. The governor of Podkarpacie Teresa Kubas-Hul is going to Krosno.

In Krosno, firefighters have been extinguishing a fire that broke out in the warehouse section of a construction store for almost an hour.

Firefighters are taking water from hydrants and the Lubatówka River, among other places. “We have built two hose mains with a length of about 1,900 meters. Two additional tankers have arrived: from Tarnów and Kraśnik, and a high-capacity smoke extraction unit is coming from Krakow,” Senior Captain Mateusz Dębiec said on Thursday afternoon.

Firefighters still can't get inside the building. “It's very dangerous because of the high temperature and total smoke,” he added. Firefighters are putting out the fire by pouring water and foam through windows and holes they made in the building's facade. They are assisted by a robot equipped with water-foam cannons (devices for feeding water and foam) and thermal imaging cameras.

Over 270 firefighters are taking part in the action, 77 fire trucks are on site. The Podkarpackie Voivode Teresa Kubas-Hul is going to Krosno.

Fish are dying in Lubatówka

The Podkarpackie Voivodeship Office in Rzeszów reported that “fire extinguishing foam flowed into the Lubatówka stream and the water temperature increased, which could have led to the observed fish kill”.

“The staff directing the rescue operations was notified of the situation. Water was collected for testing,” the provincial office reported on its social media.

As reported by the portal krosno112.pl, the voivode, at the request of the Jasło Delegation of the Provincial Inspectorate for Environmental Protection in Rzeszów, decided to install sorption barriers in Lubatówka.

The situation was also described on social media by the PZW District in Krosno.

“Dirty, foamy water reaches the Wisłok. On the bridge on Piłsudzkiego Street, you can see dozens of fish escaping down the Lubatówka to the Wisłok. The water above is brownish-black. The fish are still trying to fight for their lives… However, even invertebrates, such as leeches, are dying. Dead fish are visible everywhere,” we read in a post on Facebook.

“Ammonia alarm levels detected”

The governor's services also reported that “on Wednesday, between 9:30 p.m. and 11:00 p.m., continuous measurements of atmospheric air pollution were carried out in the area of the fire. Alarm levels of ammonia content were detected within a radius of approximately 500 meters from the source of the fire, but no threat was identified outside this area. Residents of the immediate area are asked to stay at home and not open windows,” the release reads.
