Kyiv. Explosion in the courthouse. Emergency services are at the scene, the perpetrator is dead

An explosion took place in a court in Kiev on Wednesday, the Ukrainian police said, adding that it was investigating the matter. An unspecified charge was to be detonated by a man who was brought to court for trial, the Ukrainian Interior Ministry reported. The head of the ministry informed that the perpetrator died on the spot.

Kiev authorities said that the explosion took place at 5.20 pm local time (4.20 pm in Poland). Within a kilometer radius of the building of the Shevchenko District Court, traffic was closed.

According to preliminary information, the man who was taken to the court from custody blew himself up, said the head of the Ministry of Internal Affairs Ihor Klymenko. According to the Kyiv city prosecutor’s office, the accused tried to escape while he was in the bathroom. For this, he used an explosive charge. Later, he was to barricade himself in one of the rooms.

During the operation carried out in the courthouse, two special forces officers were injured.

“Details are being worked out. Keep calm and stay away from the scene,” appealed Minister Klymenko.

The head of the Ukrainian Interior Ministry did not link the matter with Russian aggression against Ukraine.
