Analysts: Russia withdraws from Bakhmut

The American Institute for War Studies (ISW) reported on Saturday that Ukrainian forces were attacking Russian positions near the Berkhiv Reservoir northwest of Bakhmut, as evidenced by a video showing Russians fleeing Ukrainian artillery fire. According to the center, this seems to confirm the opinions of Russian military bloggers who report on the territorial gains of Ukrainians in this region.

According to the UK Department of Defence,Russia there is an acute shortage of reliable combat units”, which affects the course of fighting in the strategic sector of the Donbass.

Prigozhin: insufficient supplies of ammunition from Moscow

Most of the fighting is conducted from the Russian side by a group of Wagner mercenaries. In a Telegram post, its founder Yevgeny Prigozhin said his men had advanced 550 meters in some directions on Saturday, with Ukrainian forces controlling less than 1.78 square kilometers of the village’s center.

At the same time, as Reuters writes, Prigozhin is embroiled in an image conflict with the Moscow Ministry of Defense over a refusal to supply sufficient ammunition. One of the Wagnerians tried to deliver a personal letter from Prigozhin to the minister on Saturday Sergey Shoigu, but he failed, the group’s press service reported in a separate Telegram post. The letter concerned, says Prigozhin, the poor performance of regular troops on Wagner’s flanks.

Questions about the Ukrainian counter-offensive

According to experts, Russia’s withdrawal may be related to the anticipation of the long-announced counter-offensive by Ukraine, aimed at regaining most of the territory lost as a result of the invasion launched by Russia last year.

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky, who paid an official visit to Rome on Saturday, did not specify when such a counter-offensive would begin, Reuters noted. “I cannot answer that question, but you will see the results and Russia will feel them,” he told Italian television.
