France is attracting the attention of many media after the National Rally won the European elections and Emmanuel Macron dissolved the National Assembly. The situation also affected the French national football team. Its captain Kylian Mbappé openly appealed to young citizens not to let the far-right party come to power.

Ousmane Dembélé spoke first at the press conference. The French national team player called on his compatriots to take part in the elections. However, he did not say who they should vote for. A few days later, Marcus Thuram, another French representative, was no longer biting his tongue. He said directly about the obligation to stop the far right, i.e. Marine Le Pen's National Rally.

– As Ousmane said: we must encourage everyone to vote. As citizens, you and I, we must fight every day to stop National Rally from coming to power, said Marcus Thuram. These words resonated widely in France, where early parliamentary elections will soon be held. Specifically, on June 30 and July 7 – that is, during the European Football Championships.

One of the best football players in the world, Kylian Mbappé, the idol of young French people, tells his fans: go vote, we are at a very important moment in the history of our country. – We are the generation that can change something. We see today that extremists are at the gates of power. We have the opportunity to choose the future of our country. That's why I call on young people to vote, to realize the seriousness of the situation, said the French national football team.

The Real Madrid star even said that he did not want to represent a country where the far right would win.

Criticism towards representation

The far right has been dissatisfied with the French national team for years, specifically the fact that it consists mostly of players of African origin. The father of the leader of the National Rally, Jean-Marie Le Pen, caused a scandal 20 years ago when he stated that only foreigners played in the French national team.

“We are French,” thundered world champion Lillian Thuram at the time. Now his former teammate, Didier Deschamps, the current coach of the French national team, has defended his son. After Marcus Thuram said that National Rally should be stopped from taking power, Deschamps said that his players were outstanding footballers, but above all they were French citizens. – They can freely say whatever they want, express their opinions and political views. Their words will probably become part of the public debate and many people will be for it, many people will also be against it, commented the French national team coach.

The French Football Federation also spoke. In a special statement, she wrote that she “joins the call to take part in the vote, which is a requirement of democracy. She also wants her neutrality as an institution, as well as the neutrality of the national team for which she is responsible, to be respected and understood by everyone.”

Football activists are toning down their mood because the pre-election atmosphere in France is very tense. Over the weekend, over a hundred mass demonstrations against the far right took place across the country.

Early elections in France

According to polls, the National Union is the favorite in the parliamentary elections, but it may not win an independent majority. The second political force is the left-wing alliance called the “people's front”, which has recently formed. It is composed of: socialists, communists, the Greens and the far-left France Untamed.

– We will never agree to these people taking power in a country like France. That racism, discrimination based on skin color or religion should take place in the seventh most powerful economy in the world, in France – the country of freedom, equality and fraternity – emphasized Ian Brossat, leader of the French Communist Party, at the rally.

The early elections are the result of the decision of President Emmanuel Macron, who dissolved parliament immediately after the crushing victory of the National Union in the European elections.
