A Russian aircraft violated airspace on Monday Latvia over its border with Russia – the Latvian Ministry of Defense announced on Tuesday.

The airspace violation was recorded by Latvian radar. After illegally crossing the border, the aircraft returned to Russian airspace.

The Ministry of Defense also informed the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Riga about this situation. On Tuesday, a representative of the Russian embassy in Latvia was summoned to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The diplomat was handed a protest note in connection with Monday’s incident.

The ministry noted that against the background of Russian aggression against Ukraine on a full scale, Latvia is strengthening the protection of its land borders, airspace and territorial waters. NATO countries conduct rotational patrols in the airspace over the Baltic countries.
