Ikea Industry in Wielbark has been struggling with the falling number of orders for a long time, which resulted in financial problems and, as a result, the need to reduce employment. In the near future, 40 people will lose their jobs there, although according to employees, this may be only the beginning of planned layoffs in the Warmian-Masurian furniture factory.

“For some time now, IKEA Industry Wielbark has been experiencing a decline in orders for some product families. Despite the implementation of remedial actions, they turned out to be insufficient. Unfortunately, this means having to part with 40 colleagues, which is 2.7 percent. staff in Wielbark, numbering 1,500 employees,” the Ikea Industry press office told the tvn24.pl business editorial team.

The company emphasizes that at the beginning of June this year the plant in Wielbark provided employees with information about all planned activities and their total scope.

“We understand that it will be difficult for people affected by the change, so we will support our colleagues by offering severance pay and assistance in looking for new jobs. Our goal as IKEA Industry is to conduct business responsibly, which will ensure stable jobs in the long term.” – adds the company.

Employees concerned about the factory's decision

According to information provided by the website Tychykszczytno.pl, employees anticipate that the job cuts may be even several times higher than announced. “Up to 200 people may lose their jobs,” according to unofficial reports.

– I am horrified by what is being said about these layoffs among employees. I and several members of my family work there. If these rumors about the dismissal of 40 and then 200 people are confirmed, many people will be left destitute. So far, IKEA has been a reliable employer, which is why many people took out loans and have other obligations. We are really worried about the future – says one of the employees quoted by the portal.

The factory in Wielbark has been operating for over 16 years and produces approximately one million pieces of furniture a year. It is also one of the largest employers in the area.

Ikea Industry is the largest manufacturer of wooden furniture in the world made of solid wood and wood-based boards. The company is part of the Inter Ikea Group, responsible for management franchiseassortment, supplies, as well as own production.

In Poland, IKEA Industry employs 9,000 people in 16 factories in 8 locations. The plant in Wielbark employs a total of nearly 1,500 employees.
