Leak of Poles’ data from financial institutions. The Financial Ombudsman wants clarification

In connection with a possible leak of data, among others, of bank customers, the Financial Ombudsman sent letters to financial institutions regarding the submission of explanations. The Ombudsman wants to determine the scale of the problem and the number of blocked payment cards.

The personal data leak allegedly took place on the night of Monday, May 29 this year. for Tuesday, May 30. A large collection of logins and passwords of Polish citizens has appeared on the web. The data leak was reported by the Trusted Third Party portal, according to which several million logins and passwords from Poland were leaked to the network. This was confirmed by the Minister of Digitization in social media Janusz Cieszyński.

Due to possible data leakage, customers of banks and the related blocking of some payment cards, the Financial Ombudsman sent letters to financial institutions regarding the submission of explanations – according to a message published on the website of the Financial Ombudsman.

The Ombudsman wants to determine the scale of the problem

The institution pointed out that data leaks concerning financial market entities pose a “significant risk to customers”, in particular taking into account “numerous cases of activities related to extortion of funds as a result of cybercrime and fraud with the use of fake news”. As reported, the activities of the Commissioner are aimed at, among others: determining the scale of the problem and the number of blocked cards; checking the communication, corrective and remedial actions taken by financial institutions; verifying the number of complaints filed in connection with these events and the manner of their consideration, and above all; examining the scale of the negative impact of the event on the life situations of clients – for example in the form of inability to use the funds (e.g. when traveling abroad), rejected planned transactions or unrealized automatic orders; whether banks offer compensation to customers affected by the blocking of funds.

The bank is obliged to accept the complaint

On the basis of information obtained from financial institutions, the Financial Ombudsman will analyze the possible scope of responsibility of individual institutions for data leakage and will take further actions on this basis. “The Financial Ombudsman reminds you that in any case – also apart from the issue of data leakage – disclosure by the client of unauthorized transactions (not recognized by the client, not ordered, unknown) or the use of disclosed data by cybercriminals for an individual social engineering or phishing attack, it is necessary to contact the bank with information about the event and file a complaint in the event of damage. As emphasized, a financial market entity is obliged to accept a complaint in each of its units that serve customers.
