Legionellosis – how can you get infected? Examples of sources of infection were provided by GIS

The Chief Sanitary Inspectorate announced on Monday that the source of legionella infection is water inhaled into the respiratory tract. It added that you cannot catch it from another person or by drinking contaminated water.

Legionellosis – as indicated by the Chief Sanitary Inspectorate in the characteristics of infectious diseases on its website – is a respiratory disease caused by Legionella bacteria that can survive in water of very different temperatures. Reservoirs of bacteria are water reservoirs (natural and artificial), containing bottom sediment or silt, as well as moist soil.

Legionella bacteria are found in in sewage networks, bathing devices, showers, car washes, air conditioners. The most common route of infection is inhalation of contaminated aerosol.

The attached graphic shows that examples of sources of infection include: hot and cold water systems, condensers, sprinklers, fountains, humidifiers and inhalers.

The incubation period lasts from two to 10 days. After this period, symptoms appear, including muscle pain, headache, fever, cough, breathing difficulties. Symptoms may be accompanied by digestive system disorders, including abdominal pain, vomiting and diarrhoea.

In most cases, legionellosis is curable with antibiotics. Deaths most often occur in the elderly and in immunocompromised people.
