The storms passed through Podhale on Monday. Five people are dead, including two children. Buildings are damaged, the wind tore off part of the roof of one of the hotels in Zakopane. – Let's hide in buildings, let's not go outside, let's stay at home – appealed on TVN24, spokesman for the State Fire Service, Karol Kierzkowski.

On Monday, the fire brigade intervened about 300 times across the country due to strong winds, of which about 190 interventions were recorded only in Małopolska. In Silesia, firefighters left about 100 times – said Karol Kierzkowski, spokesman for the Commander-in-Chief of the State Fire Service, on TVN24 after 4 p.m.

The most difficult situation is in Podhale. – The wind uproots trees, knocks them down onto tourist trails, roads, railways – said Kierzkowski.

Five people died

The services report five deaths from the storms.

As a result of a strong gust of wind after 11, a tree fell on a car in the Stachonie district in Zakopane. The 23-year-old woman driving the car died on the spot. The woman was trapped in the vehicle.

The second tragic event occurred in Zakopane at Powstańców Śląskich Street around 13. A tree fell on a nine-year-old boy when he was leaving church with his parents. The child died after being taken to hospital. As Paweł Mickowski, a paramedic from the district hospital in Zakopane, said, despite resuscitation lasting over an hour and a half, he could not be saved.

Three people, including a seven-year-old child, died when they were crushed by a tree in the Rabka-Zdrój Spa Park. The tragedy occurred around 14.30. – The family went for a walk – a spokesman for the State Fire Service said on TVN24.

Damaged buildings

Residential and farm buildings were damaged due to strong winds. According to Karol Kierzkowski, most of this type of events, about 80, were recorded in Zakopane and the surrounding area.

The wind tore off, among other things, a fragment of the roof covering from one of the hotels in Zakopane. There is no information about anyone injured as a result of this incident.

Power lines were damaged. There were power outages in some towns.

Drivers in Podhale must take into account difficulties. Due to fallen trees, it is impassable, among others. route from Zakopane towards Morskie Oko.

– We appeal for special caution (…) – Let's hide in buildings, let's not go outside, let's stay at home. The wind may be very strong for a few more hours – the State Fire Service spokesman emphasized on TVN24.

Halny in the Tatra Mountains, IMWM alerts

It has been winding strongly in Podhale since Saturday, and on the night from Sunday to Monday the wind became significantly stronger. Gusts reaching 155 kilometers per hour were recorded on Kasprowy Wierch. Before 4 p.m. in Zakopane, the wind gusted to 94 km/h – reported the Institute of Meteorology and Water Management.

For southern regions IMWM issued strong wind alerts. In parts of Małopolska, second-degree warnings are in force on a three-level increasing scale. Forecasters also warn about storms and heavy rainfall in the next hours.

Due to strong winds, the Tatra trails were closed. The Tatra National Park suspended ticket sales for all trails on Monday. There are no horse-drawn carriages to Morskie Oko.
