In Lewin Brzeski (Opole Province), police arrested two men suspected of looting. Firefighters had noticed an unfamiliar car in the evacuated area earlier. The Mercedes, as it turned out, had been stolen.

The incident occurred on the night of Monday to Tuesday (16/17 September) in Lewin Brzeski. Senior cadet Patrycja Kaszuba, a press officer for the Brzeg police, said that the police were notified by firefighters who had noticed an unfamiliar car in the evacuated area. – The men could not explain why they were there. It was determined that they were driving a vehicle whose theft had been reported the day before in another town in the Brzeg district – she said.

In the vehicle, police found objects that could be used for crimes. A 39-year-old and a 40-year-old from Ruda ÅšlÄ…ska were detained and are being held at the police station in Brzeg, where they are waiting for questioning.

Services fight against looting

During Monday's meeting of the flood crisis team in WrocÅ‚aw, the Prime Minister Donald Tusk he assured that “the police and prosecutor's office will act ruthlessly, quickly and using all available tools against looters, against all those who would like to take advantage of the situation of people who had to leave their homes.”

General Wiesław Kukuła, Chief of the General Staff of the Polish Armed Forces, announced on social media the military’s involvement in the fight against such practices.

“We are sending soldiers equipped with night vision and thermal imaging devices to support the Police. Looters – night and lack of electricity will no longer be your allies,” he wrote.
