The adoption of lex anti-TVN may affect Poland’s relations with the United States. Bartosz Węglarczyk, the editor-in-chief of Onet, spoke about it on TVN24. He stressed that after introducing changes to the media law, “we will deal with the anger of the US Congress”, and this will lead to “Polish-American relations being in a dramatic situation”.

The Sejm deals with the bill on Wednesday lex anti-TVN. First, a parliamentary committee is to meet to consider the submitted amendments, and then the bill will be returned to the plenary chamber.

In the unanimous opinion of commentators, the amendment by PiS deputies targets TVN’s independence. Many journalists, politicians and institutions protested against the changes in the media law. Among others American Congressmen, both democrats and republicans, who in a joint statement warned the Polish government that the adoption of the amendment may have a negative impact on business, trade and defense relations between Poland and the US.

Bartosz Węglarczyk, the editor-in-chief of Onet, said on TVN24 on Wednesday that “Polish-American relations will be in a dramatic situation if this law comes into force”. – Voting it by the Sejm will be a dramatic step in worsening these relations. I have a strange conviction that President Kaczyński is not fully aware of this – he added.

According to Węglarczyk, “anything can happen” if anti-TVN regulations are adopted. – We will deal with the anger of the US Congress, which does not like to see the laws of American business restricted. Congress will not understand why American business is so severely punished in Poland. It seems to me that congressmen will not follow the logic of Mr Suski and will punish us for it. Unfortunately, Poland is so geographically located that without our allies our situation will be much worse – he stressed.

He noted that “our relations with America are multi-level.” – Business cooperation and investments in Poland are one level. The security of Europe, the security of NATO is a different level. I have no idea how it will reflect, but anything is possible, he said.

As he added, “in the history of Poland we have not yet experienced the indignation and fury of US congressmen.”
