Saif al-Islam, the son of former Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi, will run in the presidential elections scheduled for December 24 and under preparation with the support of the United Nations. The 49-year-old is wanted by the International Criminal Court for crimes against humanity, recalled the French agency AFP.

“Candidate Saif al-Islam Muammar Gaddafi has submitted documents regarding the registration of his candidacy at the office of the High Election Commission in the city of Sabha,” the Libyan election commission announced on Sunday.

In late July this year, the former dictator’s son said in an interview with the New York Times that he was considering his return to the political scene.

The 49-year-old is wanted by the International Criminal Court (ICC) for crimes against humanity, recalled the French agency AFP.

– The situation of Saif al-Islam Gaddafi at the International Criminal Court has not changed. After the (tribunal) statement issued in 2011, he is still a wanted person, ICC spokesman Fadi Abdallah announced on Libyan television.

Dictatorial rule

Saif al-Islam’s father, from 1969, for 42 years actually exercised dictatorial power over Libya. In 2011, the dictator was overthrown and murdered.

The December presidential election will be the first in the history of this country – emphasized the AFP.
