Lithuanian authorities are updating the border protection plan. It envisages that if necessary, the army will be deployed automatically, which is to shorten the decision-making chain. This necessity was pointed out by Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda after the revolt of the Russian Wagner Group mercenaries and the announcement of its owner, Yevgeny Prigozhin, moving to Belarus.

The Lithuanian defense and interior ministries agreed on Tuesday to update the border protection plan. The minister informed that “in the event of different levels of threat, both the services of the Ministry of the Interior and the armed forces will be automatically involved in the protection of the state border.”

Bilotaite also said that there are no new trends or threats in terms of security. She assured that the situation is under control and all services are working 24 hours a day.

Lithuania reacts to Prigozhin’s rebellion

The Lithuanian president, after the revolt of the Wagner Group mercenaries against the Russian military command, declared on Sunday that it is necessary to strengthen NATO’s eastern flank.

– If the head of the Wagner Group, Yevgeny Prigozhin, with his unclear intentions, is to end up in exile in Belarus, it will be necessary to increase security on the eastern border. And I’m not talking about Lithuania’s border here, but about NATO as a whole,” Nauseda emphasised.

On Saturday, Wagner Group mercenaries seized the Russian army headquarters in Rostov-on-Don and then began to advance towards Moscow. Prigozhin has long been at odds with the part of the Russian military establishment leading the invasion of Ukraine. He demanded “justice be restored” in the army and the removal of the defense minister from power Sergey Shoigu.

In the evening, Prigozhin announced a retreat and the withdrawal of the mercenaries to the field camps to “avoid bloodshed”. This was supposed to be the result of a deal between the Belarusian authoritarian leader Alyaksandr Lukashenko and Prigozhin, concluded in an agreement with Vladimir Putin. According to these arrangements, the mercenaries of the Wagner Group and Prigozhin himself were to move to Belarus.
