Lloyd Austin, the US secretary of defense, traveled to Europe on Sunday. Even before the meeting of ministers of NATO countries, she will visit Georgia, Ukraine and Romania to assure allies and partners of the US commitment to defend their sovereignty in the face of Russian destabilization.

“The Department of Defense unwaveringly supports its European allies and partners in the face of Russia’s destabilizing actions in the critical region of the Black Sea,” the Pentagon said.

Austin will meet with representatives of the governments of the Black Sea basin countries to strengthen mutual ties and confirm the US commitment to security, stability and development in the region, it added.

Russia has been occupying the Ukrainian Crimea since 2014 and supporting the separatists fighting in eastern Ukraine. Russian troops are also present in two separatist regions of Georgia – Abkhazia and South Ossetia, the AFP agency reminds.

Romania is a member of NATO, Georgia and Ukraine cooperate with the Alliance.

During his visit, the US Secretary of Defense is also expected to thank the visited countries for their participation in the operation in Afghanistan led by US forces, which ended in August after almost 20 years.

After visiting the Black Sea region, Austin will travel to Brussels, where on October 21 and 22, she will attend a meeting of NATO defense ministers.
