The Łódź prosecutor’s office charged four men with participation in an organized criminal group that dealt with the illegal storage of hazardous waste. – These are further arrests in a large investigation, three men and one woman were previously arrested – says Krzysztof Kopania from the District Prosecutor’s Office in Łódź. The prosecutor adds that the group organized more than three thousand transports, during which 68,000 tons of hazardous waste were transported.
The detainees are between 28 and 57 years old. All of them heard allegations of participation in an organized criminal group, three of them of leading it.
– In addition, according to the findings, individual suspects were accused of acts consisting in the storage of hazardous waste in a way that endangers human life or health and the natural environment, certifying untruths in documents, tax deductions, issuing unreliable invoices and money laundering – lists Krzysztof Kopania, spokesman for the Łódź district prosecutor’s office .
He adds that the arrests were made thanks to the actions of officers from the Central Investigation Bureau of the Police, the National Revenue Administration and inspectors of the Provincial Inspectorate for Environmental Protection. – It became clear at an early stage that criminal activity is very wide-ranging. Cases conducted by other prosecutor’s offices have also been joined to the proceedings, Kopania reports.
Thousands of tons of hazardous waste
The prosecutor emphasizes that members of the criminal group collected hazardous waste from a number of companies, which should be disposed of in accordance with applicable procedures. However, that was not the case.
– Using a network of related entities, they were transported and abandoned on the premises of rented properties in the Łódź Voivodeship and in other parts of Poland – says Kopania.
Prosecutors established on the basis of expert opinions that the waste collected in this way posed a threat to human life or health and the natural environment.
– As it was established, more than three thousand transports with the content of 68,000 were made within the criminal group. tons of hazardous waste, emphasizes Kopania.
Members of the criminal group – as Kopania says – created the appearance of legality: they tried to hide the real places of abandonment of unprocessed waste.
– There were cases of untruths being certified in documents that were required to be issued in connection with the transport and acceptance of waste. Fictitious VAT invoices were also used – says Kopania.
This, in turn, as the prosecutor points out, led to extortion VAT for the amount of PLN 1.6 million.
The prosecutor’s office reports that these are the next suspects in this case, earlier – as Krzysztof Kopania says – three men and one woman were arrested.
Five other people have also been charged, the prosecutor said.
The allegations presented to the suspects concern acts committed in the years 2021-2022. In relation to some of them, there is a threat of up to 15 years of imprisonment.
