On Tuesday, Pope Francis accepted the resignation of Bishop Ireneusz Pękalski from the office of an auxiliary bishop of the Archdiocese of Łódź – the curia informed. The resignation was related to the reached retirement age by the bishop.

Ireneusz Pękalski was an auxiliary bishop of the Archdiocese of Łódź for 25 years. He was appointed in December 1999, receiving Castello di Tingizio as the titular capital. He received the episcopal sacrament in January 2000 in the Łódź Archcathedral. Earlier, in 1987-1993, he was the Vice-Rector of the Major Seminary in Łódź, and from 1993 to 2000 he was the rector of this university.

In the years 2011-2016, the priest was a delegate of the Polish Episcopal Conference for Priesthood of Women, previously also entered, among others The Commission for God's Culture and the Sacrament Discipline and the KEP Council for Ecumenism. He is also a judge of the Łódź Church Tribunal, secretary of the priesthood council, member of the College of Consultors, the vice -presidential case of the canonization of the Servant of God Wanda Malczewska, editor -in -chief of “Theological Studies of Łódź”. As emphasized on the curia's website, he made a serious contribution to the work of the Third Synod of the Archdiocese of Lodz.
In March this year Bishop Pękalski turned 75 and put it on his arms Pope Francis resignation from the service of the Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of Łódź. In the Archdiocese in Łódź, auxiliary bishops remain: Bishop Marek Marczak and Bishop Bishop Piotr Kleszcz and Bishop Zbigniew Wołkowicz nominated by Pope Francis in September last year.
