The new section of the western bypass of Łódź, i.e. the S14 expressway, allows you to conveniently get to Aleksandrów Łódzki, Zgierz and Emilia, but there is a problem with getting to… Łódź. Until now, it has not been possible to build a road that would make it easy for drivers from this city to reach the new section of the thoroughfare opened with pomp by the authorities. The connection from the node in Aleksandrów to ul. Szczecińska in Łódź is to be built in the future – a tender has been announced for now. In practice, the road may be open at the end of 2025 at the earliest.

A 16-kilometer section of the S14 expressway from Aleksandrów Łódzki to Emilia near Zgierz was opened last Friday. Law and Justice politicians appeared on the spot: the Minister of Culture Piotr GlinskiMinister of Infrastructure Andrew Adamczyk and the Minister of Foreign Affairs Zbigniew Rau. There was much to celebrate, because Łódź thus became the first city with a full ring of expressways – the A2 motorway in the north, the A1 motorway in the east, the S8 road in the south and finally – the S14 road in the west.

The problem is that there would be more reasons to celebrate for Łódź drivers if the investment was complete. For the time being, they cannot enter the S14 from the city side, because a slightly over one kilometer section connecting ul. Szczecińska with the Aleksandrów Łódzki junction has not been built.

– Currently, it is easy to get to Emilia, Zgierz or Aleksandrów Łódzki. Unfortunately, Łódź itself is a bit worse – reports Piotr Borowski, a TVN24 reporter who deals with the case.

The missing section may be completed by the end of 2025TVN24

There will be an episode…

For these inconveniences local government officials from Łódź, who appeared at the opening of S14, “thanked” the government officials. – Thank you for the motorway ring, which has no exit to Łódź, these are thanks on behalf of the inhabitants – said Marcin Gołaszewski to Andrzej Adamczyk.

Maciej Zalewski, spokesman for the General Directorate for National Roads and Motorways in Łódź, emphasizes that the section connecting Szczecińska Street with the junction in Aleksandrów Łódzki will be built, but drivers still need to be patient.

We couldn’t do everything at once. We prioritized the issue of closing the ring around Łódź – says Zalewski.

He emphasizes that a tender has been announced for the construction of the missing section connecting the junction with Łódź. – We are in the process of collecting offers. If there are no appeals and everything goes smoothly, then in the summer we should meet the contractor of the section, who will then have 11 months to build, without winter periods – says Zalewski.

The episode is to be made, but only in the futureTVN24

In practice, this may mean that the connector will be ready by the end of 2025.

“Unjustified Criticism”

Spokesperson of the Lodz branch GDDKiA emphasizes in an interview with tvn24.pl that he is “surprised” by criticism from local government officials in Łódź and some drivers.

– Saying that you can’t get to Łódź via the western ring road is unjustified. On S14 we have the Łódź Lublinek junction and the Łódź Retkinia junction. Direct access to the city is also possible from the Konstantynów Łódzki junction, driving along Złotno Street. The fact that the junction in Alekasandrów lacks a connector to Szczecińska, but we are working on it. I believe that the criticism that falls on us is unjustified – says Zalewski.

He emphasizes that the construction of a section connecting the junction in Aleksandrów with Szczecińska Street does not yet mean that drivers driving in this part of the city will be able to freely access the S14. Szczecińska Street is still waiting for renovation, the city is responsible for this investment.

A brawl at the opening of the S14 expresswayTVN24

The new section of S14 has two roadways with two traffic lanes and an emergency lane with a bituminous surface. The value of the contract, which was carried out by the Chinese company Stecol Corporation, amounted to PLN 811 million. The construction of two sections of S14 was co-financed by the European Union under the Operational Program Infrastructure and Environment in the amount of PLN 903.6 million.
