Before the presidential race begins, the parties are grounded in the starting blocks. There are more candidates than places to be taken, and there are no 100% or official certainties. For now, the strategy is to wait and see, and no one seems to want to step out of line.
Unofficially, in the Civic Coalition you can hear that RafaÅ‚ Trzaskowski is their candidate for president – nothing has changed, but the official announcement will be made in a month. – You will all find out on December 7 in Silesia – says Monika Wielichowska, deputy speaker of the Sejm (KO).
The unexpected proposal of PSL on October 28 to select a common candidate surprised the coalition partners. But Donald Tusk immediately closed the case. In the first round of elections, each party goes separately, without attacking each other.
– The most important thing is that we mobilize all voters who believed in us a year ago and that each party works very hard for this – comments the mayor of Warsaw, RafaÅ‚ Trzaskowski. – The candidate should be common, but should be common in the second round – says Cezary Tomczyk, deputy minister of national defense from the Civic Coalition.
Where did this idea of the People's Party come from? Unofficially – because officially you won't hear anything – Third Way is at a crossroads, and PSL has no desire to support Szymon HoÅ‚ownia for president and was looking for a loophole.
The People's Party did not indicate Szymon HoÅ‚ownia as a possible common candidate. And he himself is delaying the decision. – Mr. Marshal is wondering. He asked to be given some time to talk about this topic with his family, says PaweÅ‚ Åšliz, MP from Poland 2050.
– If Szymon HoÅ‚ownia decides, I think he has the smallest negative electorate – says Paulina Henning-Kloska, Minister of Climate and Environment from Poland 2050.
Sikorski more palatable to PSL voters?
The second issue is RadosÅ‚aw Sikorski's presidential ambitions. Sikorski and his views could be more palatable – this is what PSL calculated and discussed with the head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs – for their electorate. Sikorski himself has his supporters in the coalition.
– In my opinion, Radek Sikorski has a better chance of winning in the second round – says Joanna Kluzik-Rostkowska, KO MP. The fact that Sikorski is conducting a presidential offensive is clear to everyone. As for the Civic Coalition's decision, he says nothing is certain. – In the second half of November, we will conduct in-depth research and based on it we will make a decision – announces the Minister of Foreign Affairs.
The Civic Coalition has been conducting research for a long time. We have unofficially learned about internal polls. A second round was examined in September. Trzaskowski wins against the Law and Justice candidate 46 to 33. Sikorski has the same support as the PiS candidate. In both studies there is a large group of undecided people.
PiS is postponing the decision
Who will PiS field? The decision is being delayed. PiS abandoned the primary elections and postponed presenting its candidate. – We ordered additional tests. This is another series of tests of candidates, each of whom, it seems, can fight for the presidency, says Mateusz Morawiecki, an MP from Law and Justice.
– This list – including the media information – does not include people for whom we are also conducting research – adds MichaÅ‚ Wójcik, PiS MP.
KO politicians emphasize that when the second round comes, support for their candidate should be unconditional. – So that no one would think of contesting our common candidate – says Jakub Rutnicki, KO MP.
– We have to play open cards with the voters. The first round is about full mobilization of your electorates, so that as many of them as possible can vote in the second round and win the elections – says Tomasz Trela, MP from the Left, which will present its candidate in January.
