At the age of 87, Loretta Swit – American actress of Polish origin, a winner of two Emma awards. Houlhan in the series “M*a*S*H” played the swit for over ten years.
American actress Loretta Swit died in her home in New York. She was 87 years old. The artist won two Emmy awards for the best supporting actress and ten nominations for the role of Major Margaret “Holy Lip” Houlhan – supervisor of nurses of the American unit during the Korean war. The series was broadcast in 1972-1983.
The Swit defined her role by playing a strong, determined, independent woman who had an impact on the development of the story. She appeared in almost all of over 250 episodes and the finals of the series, which was the most watched episode of the television series in history.
The series was based on the real experience of a military surgeon who wrote the book in 1968 “Mash: A Novel About Three Army Doctors” and on the black comedy of Robert Altman from 1970 with the same title.
– From the very beginning of the series, we realized how unique it is – said the Swit in an interview with Fox News in 2017.
Loretta Swit is dead
Loretta Swit was born on November 4, 1937 in New Jersey as the daughter of Polish immigrants Lester and Nellie Szwedów. After graduating from school – contrary to the firm opposition from her parents – she began studying acting in New York. The high, blond star of the stage and television was a vegetarian and animal lover.
The actress debuted on Broadway in the art “next year at the same time” in 1975. She also performed in the musical “Mame” and in the monodrama “Shirley Valentine”.
– Acting is not hiding to me, it is a revelation. We give you the right to feel. This is the most important thing in the world, because when you stop feeling, it means that you are dead – said the Swit in an interview with the Star magazine in 2010.
She married the actor of Dennis Holahan, who played the Swedish diplomat in “M*a*S*H”. The couple divorced in 1995 and had no children.
