The next Summer Olympics – in 2028 – are to be held in Los Angeles. The city is already investing in public transport. It is also focusing on existing infrastructure – instead of building an Olympic village, it will use the dormitories of the University of California. The organizers are also assuming an ambitiously low budget.
The Olympic flag is already in Los Angeles. It was brought by the city's mayor, straight from Paris. Karen Bass does not hide the fact that she was very impressed by how the French capital managed to organize the games. – A friendship has developed between our cities. We have a lot to learn from Paris. One of the most exciting things was that the games in Paris were for everyone. Now, when I landed and saw all the people of Los Angeles greeting us, it dawned on me that it all has already begun – said Mayor Bass.
The Summer Olympics will be held in Los Angeles in July and August 2028. Organizers say LA is one of the most important places for world culture and the games are meant to reflect that.
The LA 2028 project is promoted by famous figures, and not only from the world of sports – including singer Billie Eilish and Red Hot Chilli Peppers vocalist Anthony Kiedis. – While many people think that Los Angeles is unfriendly, I think it is quite friendly. It can help you – says Billie Eilish. – What I love most about Los Angeles is the ocean, the mountains, the palm trees. I love that people come here and try to change their lives. Los Angeles still has its spirit – admits Anthony Kiedis.
Los Angeles plans car-free games
The ambition of Los Angeles authorities is to organize the games without cars – athletes and fans are to travel only by public transport. For one of the most congested cities in the world, this is a huge challenge.
“We are working to create new jobs by expanding our public transportation system. We want a car-free Olympics. In the case of Los Angeles, this is a real feat because we have always loved our cars, but we want to create a greener Los Angeles,” he assured. Karen Bass.
The city authorities are planning, among other things, to borrow 3,000 buses from other American cities for the duration of the games. Los Angeles has a population of less than 4 million, but the metropolitan area, the so-called Greater Los Angeles, is inhabited by 18 million people. As in Paris, the homelessness crisis is a major problem for the organizers of the games and the city authorities. “They need to work on safety in the subway. We need to feel comfortable in it. They need to improve the cleanliness of the city and the situation of the homeless – they need to provide them with a roof over their heads so they can walk around the city safely,” lists Charity Manley, a resident of Los Angeles.
In 2028, new disciplines will appear at the games: squash, lacrosse and cricket. Breakdancing, which debuted in Paris, will disappear.
The budget for the Los Angeles Games is expected to be relatively small
The budget of the event is to be less than 7 billion dollars. Considering the scale of the undertaking, this is quite an optimistic amount – as indicated by the experience of Paris, which exceeded the initial budget of the games by over 100 percent. – We know for sure how much the games cost. It is approximately 10 billion euros. So to give it some comparison – these are supposedly the cheapest games since the Atlanta games – points out Tadeusz KolasiÅ„ski from the Institute of Political Sciences in Paris.
Like in Paris, most of the infrastructure is already in place in Los Angeles, and only renovation will be needed. The famous Memorial Stadium will host the third opening ceremony in its history. Los Angeles hosted the games in 1932 and 1984. 40 years ago, the event was ruined by a boycott by the communist bloc, which prevented Poland from flying to the games.
Among the threats to the 2028 games are the frequent earthquakes that hit California. The latest one hit on Monday. It had a magnitude of 4.4.
