Trade unions operating in the Lublin coal mine Bogdanka sent a letter to the management board of the company, in which they ask about the causes of the failure in the Stefanów field and the future of the plant. They expect detailed explanations about the incident. They also want to know how this situation will affect the company’s liquidity. – The mood among the crew is tense – one union member admitted in an interview with a TVN24 reporter.

On Thursday (February 16), TVN24 reporter Bartłomiej Ślak reported that work in the Stefanów excavation due to a failure may be suspended for several months. – According to our information, the excavation in the Stefanów field pours up to five cubic meters of water per minute, which is a lot. According to our information, there may be a break in production from four to six months. This would mean huge financial losses for the Bogdanka mine – he reported.

The fact that representatives of trade unions sent a letter to the management board of Lubelski Węgiel Bogdanka SA was told on Friday by TVN24 reporter Jacek Świrszcz from the Miners’ Trade Union in Poland at the Bogdanka mine in Lublin.

As he admitted, employees want to know detailed information about the failure in the Stefanów field, which stopped production. The crew is concerned that this situation could affect the future of the plant. They fear for their jobs and salaries.

– We want the management to explain to us what were the causes of the failure and what the consequences may be in order to provide the crew with reliable information about what happened in the mine – said the trade unionist.

He also admitted that trade unionists were informed by long-term employees of the mine that the situation in the Stefanów field was difficult. “They are concerned about the subject and the future of the plant,” said Świrszcz.

He also referred to statements of Lubelski Węgiel SA, which was published on the website of Lubelski Węgiel SA Bogdanka on Thursday (February 16), almost a week after the event. “For me, he is not satisfactory,” he said. He added: – We want full information about what happened.

Representatives of Lubelski Węgiel did not speak on the matter for a long time. It was only on Thursday (February 16) that the company published a statement in which it confirmed the failure. The communiqué states that “(…) the key risks that were taken into account in the scenario analysis prepared for the Company’s needs have materialized. Therefore, the Technical Board, after consulting representatives of the Central Mining Institute, decided to suspend further exploitation of this longwall due to in extreme cases, this could preclude further exploitation of the lower seams 389 and 391 in the entire southern part of the Puchaczów V mining area.

The company’s authorities also assured that “the production plan (8.3 million tons of commercial coal) announced in September last year in current report No. 21/2022 is not at risk. The fact that there was a failure in the Bogdanka mine in Lublin, she said on Wednesday, February 15, during a press conference organized by Marta Wcisło, an MP from the Civic Coalition, in front of the seat of the mine in Lublin.

Wcisło informed then that she wanted to meet the company’s management board to personally ask about the current situation in the mine in Lublin. – I prepared 18 questions and wanted to meet the board of Bogdanka, unfortunately no one came to me – she commented. And she added: – I wanted to ask the management board of Bogdanka why it is concealing and concealing from the shareholders and the public the fact that once again the wall was tightened and the pillar broke, which consequently led to water intrusion.

She also reminded that on February 1, she wanted to carry out a parliamentary inspection in the Lublin company and to this day she has not received answers to the questions asked at that time. Now the management has not come to her. This is why – as she informed – she decided to report to the Supreme Audit Office and the prosecutor’s office about preventing her from performing tasks under the Act on the performance of the mandate of a deputy and senator.

In mid-September last year Bogdanka has reduced its commercial coal production plan this year from 9.2 million to 8.3 million tonnes. At that time, the company announced that in the longwall 3/VII/385 launched at the end of August, there was a sudden and unexpected increase in operating pressure, which resulted in its tightening. Lubelski Węgiel Bogdanka is a hard coal producer whose recipients include, among others, industrial companies, including entities operating in the power industry in eastern and north-eastern Poland. Bogdanka is a joint-stock company listed on the Warsaw Stock Exchange, but almost 65 percent. of its shares is controlled by the State Treasury Enea.
