Bartłomiej B., who admitted to killing his father and brother and later escaped from the hospital where he was under observation, heard new charges. The crime took place in July in Zagumno in the Lublin region.
The man was brought to the prosecutor's office on Friday and interrogated. He was then brought up on additional charges – concerning the murder of his father and self-liberation.
– He basically admitted to committing these acts, but gave very limited explanations – said Rafał Kawalec, spokesman for the District Prosecutor's Office in Zamość. He admitted that the case “will slowly come to an end.” – Most of the evidentiary activities have already been carried out – he added.
Crime in Zagumno, escape from the hospital
In July, the police found the bodies of a 45-year-old man and an unconscious 65-year-old man in one of the houses in Zagumno. Both had serious head injuries caused by ax blows. Immediately after the arrest, the suspect, Bartłomiej B., pleaded guilty. He indicated the conflict with the injured parties as the reason for his behavior.
The court decided to temporarily arrest Bartłomiej B. Then, the 34-year-old was sent for forensic and psychiatric observation to the hospital in Radecznica, from where he escaped on the night of October 6-7. The police caught him after 10 days in a vacant building in Żarnowa in Podkarpacie. He wanted to cross the border with Slovakia and continue his escape to southern Europe. He was arrested in Radom.
The prosecutor originally charged Barłomiej B. with the murder of his brother and the attempted murder of his father, but after the 65-year-old died in hospital and the suspect escaped, he had to supplement the charges. The suspect faces life imprisonment.
“Grossly inappropriate” behavior of guards
Due to the escape of the suspect, the Zamość prosecutor's office is conducting an investigation into the failure to fulfill official duties by the Prison Service officers, whose behavior – according to previous findings – was “grossly incorrect”.
The prosecutor's office reported that during the performance of their official duties, the SW officers were not in the same room with the suspect and did not exercise direct supervision over him, which allowed Bartłomiej B. to remove the handcuffs, move freely around the hospital, leave the facility and resulted in a delay in initiating the search operation.
– The findings show that before and after the escape, two Prison Service officers were sleeping while on duty – said prosecutor Kawalec.
Prison Guard officers were suspended from their duties.
