Doctors from the Provincial Hospital of Stefan Kardynał Wyszyński in Lublin, performed a procedure during which they were the first in Poland to implant the patient with a hip prosthesis, which was printed in a 3D printer by a Polish company. The process that led to this took about two months. The implants had to be carefully adjusted to the bone defects.

– The implants that the patient had previously had loosened over the years and – as they moved – led to bone damage. So we had to put on a new prosthesis. Only this time it is not standard, as before, but specifically tailored to the bone defects that a given person has – explains Dr. Andrzej Atras, head of the trauma and orthopedic department of the Wojewódzki Szpital im. Stefana Cardinal Wyszyński in Lublin at ul. Herbert 21.

Technology has penetrated orthopedics from oncology

There have been such operations before, but hip prostheses were usedwhich were printed by foreign companies. In our case, it is a Polish company with which we have been cooperating for years. This technology has penetrated orthopedics from oncology, where it is used to fill large bone defects that occur after the removal of a tumor – the doctor points out.

The whole process that led to the insertion of the prosthesis took about two months.

– At the beginning we had to do imaging tests – including tomography and MRI – the results of which we sent to the company. The latter developed a model of the implant and indicated how it would be embedded in the bones. Later, we – knowing biology and knowing how the prosthesis is supposed to function – sent our comments. After taking them into account, the design of the implant was created. First, a plastic trial version was printed in a 3D printer, and then the actual titanium implant. Just in case, a duplicate was created, in case something happened to the first one, describes Dr. Atras.

She emphasizes that the innovation introduced by the Polish company is to cover the implant with a porous silicon-carbon coating, which is to stimulate the bones to grow into the implant structure, which in turn should enable the patient to reach physical fitness faster.

– The coating also has an antibacterial effect, which is supposed to reduce the risk of infections. The patient is already home. He still has to walk on crutches, but he is recovering – emphasizes the doctor.
