As prosecutor Agnieszka Kępka, spokeswoman for the District Prosecutor’s Office in Lublin, told us on Saturday (January 7), the investigation was initiated under Article 177 paragraph 2 of the Penal Code, which concerns causing a fatal accident. – The bodies of young people who died in this incident have been secured for examination. A decision on the date of the autopsy will be made on Monday, the prosecutor said.

At the scene, investigators secured traces, which are to contribute to clarifying the causes and circumstances of the tragedy. The car in which the four teenagers were traveling was also seized. – The vehicle will be examined by an expert in technical terms – said Kępka. He will be proficient in checked whether the car was in good working order at the time of the accident.

On Saturday, Anna Kamola from the press team of the Provincial Police Headquarters in Lublin announced that the identity of the third victim had been established. “She’s a 16-year-old woman,” the police officer told us. She added that the condition of the 16-year-old boy – who was the only one to survive the tragic accident and was hospitalized – is serious but stable.

Kamola previously reported that the accident happened on Thursday (January 5) before midnight on ul. John Paul II in Lublin. – The driver of an Audi A4 suddenly – for reasons unknown so far – left the road – she said. The vehicle pierced energy-intensive barriers and shattered on a lighting pole and a trolleybus traction pole.

The force of the impact was so great that the car was crushed. To get the victims of the accident out of the vehicle, the help of the fire brigade and the use of specialized equipment to cut the car were needed, she said in an interview with TVN24.

The 18-year-old driver, a 17-year-old passenger and a young girl, whose age was initially unknown, died at the scene. The injured 16-year-old was taken to the hospital.

By the decision of the prosecutor, the bodies of the victims of the accident were secured for autopsy. We will clarify whether the driver of the vehicle could have been intoxicated or after using other means – announced the police officer.

Witnesses helped one of the passengers

Junior brigadier Marcin Babula from the Lublin fire brigade reported that three people were trapped inside the car, and the fourth was probably freed from the wreck by bystanders. “Our operations ended before 4 a.m. on Friday,” he said.

As the TVN24 reporter Małgorzata Mielcarek found out, the witnesses of the event pulled the injured 16-year-old out of the vehicle and immediately helped him.

As senior captain Andrzej Szacoń, spokesman for the Lublin fire brigade, said in an interview with a TVN24 reporter, when the firefighters arrived at the scene, one of the victims was already outside. “Firefighters immediately gave him first aid,” the spokesman said.

Firefighters then tried to reach the other victims. The doctor pronounced the three teenagers dead, so the firemen withdrew from further action and let the policemen work. Later, they pulled the bodies trapped in the car outside. – It was quite difficult because the car was badly damaged (…). We had to use hydraulic tools and handheld demolition equipment to create access to these people, Szacoń informed.
