The lunar eclipse is about to appear in the sky. It will be best seen in North America. In the case of Poland, only the inhabitants of a part of the country will have a chance to admire the phenomenon. How to prepare for a lunar eclipse?
One of the most important astronomical events this year is ahead of us. The longest lunar eclipse in this century will take place in just two weeks. On November 19, the Earth will be between the Sun and the Moon, casting a shadow on our natural satellite. In some parts of the world, the planet will block 97 percent of the Moon from light, giving it a reddish tinge.
According to NASA, the upcoming partial lunar eclipse will last three hours, 28 minutes and 23 seconds in regions where it is best seen. This is much longer than any other eclipse in the 21st century.
Lunar eclipse November 2021 – where will it be visible?
Lunar eclipses are not visible all over the world – only in places where our natural satellite is above the horizon.
The November phenomenon will be most visible in North America. Most of the eclipse can also be seen by people in South America, Western Europe, Australia and Oceania, western regions of Africa and a large part of Asia. The eclipse will not be admired in most of Africa, the Middle East and parts of Eastern Europe.
If weather conditions permit, the eclipse will appear in the western and central regions of Poland a few moments before lunar sunset (which will occur around 6.59 on Friday). This time, the inhabitants of the eastern part of the country most likely will not see the phenomenon.
If you fail to spot changes on the lunar face, NASA experts are in a hurry to cheer you up. Over the next eight decades, they say, there will be as many as 179 lunar eclipses, an average of two per year. The next phenomenon can be admired on May 16, 2022.
Lunar eclipse – how to prepare?
Lunar eclipses are one of the simplest phenomena to observe. It is enough to just go out into the air at a given time and just look at our natural satellite. You do not need any devices for regular observation, although to see as many details as possible, it is worth having, for example, binoculars with you.
What is a lunar eclipse?
During an ordinary full moon, the Moon’s disc is illuminated by sunlight reflecting off its surface. However, in the event of a lunar eclipse, the sun and earth briefly line up so that our planet blocks sunlight from reaching the moon.
Why is the moon turning red?
A total lunar eclipse occurs when 100 percent of the lunar disk is obscured by the Earth. In the case of less shade coverage, it is referred to as a partial eclipse. Partial lunar eclipses may not be as spectacular as total lunar eclipses, but they happen more often.
During a total or near total eclipse – as will be the case this month – the lunar surface turns a bloody color. This is because of the oxygen and nitrogen molecules in the Earth’s atmosphere. They are better at scattering certain shorter wavelengths of light (blue or purple), so longer wavelength colors (red, orange or yellow) are visible longer. When the Moon is in the shadow of the Earth, reddish colors predominate.
