Two journalists have been jailed for his or her protection of protests sparked by the loss of life of a girl in Iran final 12 months, Iranian state media has reported. 

Mahsa Amini, 22 died whereas in police custody after she was alleged to have violated the strict Islamic gown code, with her death causing months of mass demonstrations in Iran and internationally.

Niloofar Hamedi and Elaheh Mohammadi have been sentenced to 13 and 12 years in jail respectively for expenses together with collaboration with the US authorities, and performing in opposition to nationwide safety.

Attorneys for the 2 journalists have rejected the fees.

“They obtained seven years and 6 years every respectively for collaborating with the hostile US authorities. Then every 5 years in jail for performing in opposition to the nationwide safety and every one 12 months in jail for propaganda in opposition to the system,” the Islamic Republic Information Company (IRNA) reported.

Why they had been detained

Hamedi was detained after she took an image of Amini’s dad and mom hugging one another outdoors a hospital in Tehran, the place their daughter lay in a coma.
