After heavy rains, severe flooding hit Bangladesh and India. There are deaths. Residents fled from the high water to the roofs of their homes.
At least 11 people have died in the northeastern Indian state of Tripura, while at least two people have been confirmed dead in Bangladesh, authorities said. In Tripura, more than 64,000 people have been displaced. The disaster in Bangladesh has affected more than 300,000 people.
Hundreds of homes have been flooded. Rescue efforts are underway. “I don't expect people to be able to return home anytime soon,” said Musammat Shahina Akter, an official in the city of Pheni in Bangladesh's eastern Chittagong province.
They escape the flood onto the roofs
Kazi Piash, a 24-year-old resident of Pheni, said he took refuge on the roof of his house when the water reached up to his neck. “We've been on the roof for hours. We've set up a makeshift tent, but there are about 40 of us on the roofs of two single-story houses,” he said.
Over the past few days, parts of Tripura state as well as districts in eastern Bangladesh have been receiving heavy rainfall of nearly 200 litres per square metre.
Water in rivers on both sides of the India-Bangladesh border has reached extremely high levels.
