A two-story beach restaurant building collapsed on Thursday evening in Palma de Mallorca, Majorca's main city. Four people died and at least 16 were injured as a result of the collapse, Reuters reported, citing the police.

At least four people died after a building collapsed on Thursday evening in Playa de Palma – the tourist area of ​​Palma de Mallorca. The disaster occurred at the Medusa Beach Club restaurant, located near a popular place among beachgoers. According to local authorities, 16 people inside the building were injured in the accident. Seven people suffered “very serious” injuries and nine were seriously injured, the emergency services reported on Platform X. The injured were taken to various hospitals in Palma de Mallorca.

Rescue coordinators claim that the number of people injured in the tragic incident may increase. Some sources on Friday morning reported that more than 20 people were injured.

According to rescue teams and local authorities, the probable cause of the tragedy was overloading the terrace on the first floor of the building. Witnesses claim that at the time of the tragic incident, there was a large group of customers on the terrace, including foreign holidaymakers, as well as numerous restaurant employees.

As reported by agencies, chaos reigned around the building at night due to the large number of rescue teams and numerous onlookers. A search was underway in the restaurant basement, which also collapsed. “I am closely following the consequences of the terrible collapse that occurred on the beach in Palma,” said the Prime Minister Spain Pedro Sánchez on portal “I want to express my condolences to the families of the deceased and wish a speedy recovery to the injured,” wrote the head of the Spanish government.
