“Mother of God with Child” was painted in the early sixteenth century. The valuable painting has long been part of the furnishings of the church in Żębocin (Proszowice County, Małopolska). In early June it turned out that he had disappeared from the parish. After a few months, he found himself in one of Warsaw’s auction houses, where he was put up for sale.
The police were looking for the painting from the beginning of June, after being notified by the Provincial Office for the Protection of Monuments in Krakow, whose employees realized that the painting had disappeared somewhere. The painting, the date of which it was created in the years 1520-1530, has a high market value.
– It’s about tempera on a board in the Gothic-Renaissance style. The work is by an unknown author. The market value of the painting could now reach 100,000 or even several hundred thousand zlotys, says the junior inspector Sebastian Gleń from the Krakow voivodeship headquarters.
Police officers from the district headquarters in Proszowice began to determine how the painting disappeared from the parish. At the same time, they were checking outlets selling art works. It was a good lead. – During the investigation it was found that the painting was on display in one of the Warsaw auction houses – says Sebastian Gleń.
On Monday, September 20, policemen from Lesser Poland went to the capital to look after a work of art. They were assisted in their activities by a uniform from the capital command. – The painting has been secured and has also been inspected. Then the monument was handed over by the policemen from Proszowice to the deposit of the Archdiocese Museum in Kielce – emphasizes the junior inspector Sebastian Gleń from the Kraków provincial headquarters.
An investigation under the supervision of the Kraków-Nowa Huta District Prosecutor’s Office is ongoing. For its sake, the investigators do not inform about how the work of art ended up in the Warsaw auction house.
