During archaeological work related to the construction of a new metro line in Brussels, bones of prehistoric animals, including mammoths, were found, the Belga news agency reported on Friday, citing an announcement by the Secretary of State for Urban Planning and Cultural Heritage, Ans Persoons.

“The bones were found during excavations in the south of the city,” Persoons said at the archaeological laboratory in urban.brussels. Urban.brussels is the government service responsible for implementing regional policies in the field of spatial planning, cultural heritage and urban regeneration throughout the Brussels Capital Region. The organization also deals with preventive archaeological excavations, which are carried out during the construction of the metro.

At a depth of 8-9 meters

Prehistoric bone fragments date back to the Paleolithic period. They include male and female mammoths, as well as giant deer and wild horses. – These artifacts were found at a depth of eight to nine meters, in layers of sediment from the last ice age – explained Bea De Cupere, an archaeozoologist from the Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences, in an interview with the Belga Agency. The bones are estimated to be 12,000 years old. up to 120 thousand years. A more accurate estimate of the age of the find will be possible after further analysis of the bones in the laboratory.
