A powerful storm hit the Russian republic of Mari El on Saturday. Despite the very strong gusts that appeared in the vicinity of Lake Yalchik, tourists resting there did not want to run away. The wind broke trees, some of them fell over tents pitched on the “wild beach”.

At least eight people died at Lake Yalchik in the Russian republic of Mari El. Trees knocked down by the strong wind fell on the campsite, the independent portal “Meduza” reported, citing local authorities.

Among the eight dead are three children, the mayor of the region’s capital, Yoshkar-Oly, Yevgeny Maslov, informed. 10 people were hospitalized.

Local authorities say that trees fell on tents on a wild beach, and tourists did not report their rest and rested “in the wild”.

As Meduza writes, on Saturday evening, storms with strong winds swept over eight regions of the Volga Federal State. The storms disrupted power supplies in 520 towns, damaged the roofs of 41 apartment buildings and seven social services buildings in eight different regions of Russia, officials said.

In total, 10 people were killed in severe weather across central Russia.
