From the first day of my imprisonment, I have been starting a hunger protest, said Mariusz Kamiński, a legally convicted and imprisoned PiS politician, in a statement.

Mariusz Kamiński “just before being detained” he wrote a statement addressed to the Minister of Justice Adam Bodnar. They were read on Wednesday at a press conference by Błażej Poboży, a close associate of the convicted politician.

Kamiński argues in a statement that he was “convicted of fighting corruption.” “I treat the conviction and the unlawful actions taken to deprive me of my parliamentary mandate as an act of political revenge. Therefore, as a political prisoner, I am starting a hunger protest from the first day of my imprisonment,” he said.

He appealed for “the immediate release from prison of all members of the former CBA management covered by the act of clemency issued by the president in 2015.”

Kamiński and Wąsik detained at the Presidential Palace

On Tuesday evening, the police entered the Presidential Palace and detained Mariusz Kamiński and Maciej Wąsik, legally convicted PiS politicians. Politicians have been in the building since the morning, where the president invited them. Kamiński and Wąsik claim that they should not be punished because in 2015 – after a non-final verdict – he pardoned them Andrzej Duda.

What were Mariusz Kamiński and Maciej Wąsik convicted of?

In 2007, the CBA, headed by Mariusz Kamiński (Maciej Wąsik was his deputy) organized a provocation that was intended to attack the then Minister of Agriculture, Andrzej Lepper. The suspected agents of the Bureau were to offer officials a bribe of several million zlotys for the de-agriculture of a plot of land in Masuria. Due to the leak, no money was transferred and the CBA operation ended in failure. As a result, Lepper was dismissed by Jarosław Kaczyński (he was prime minister at that time). The political earthquake led to the collapse of the PiS-Samoobrona-LPR coalition and to premature electionsas a result of which the PO-PSL coalition took power.

Judge Anna Bator-Ciesielska, who announced the final judgment in the case of Kamiński and Wąsik in December 2023, said that their actions years ago, when they headed the CBA, “were far from” the standard of operation of law enforcement agencies within the framework of operational control and provocation. – The activities undertaken by the defendants described in the judgment were not only illegal (…) They were not activities aimed at detecting crimes, but rather creating the crime – said the judge.
