Mariusz Kaminski on Saturday he posted on the X website his letter to the EC regarding “The Commission's acceptance of the Russian narrative to justify the attack on Poland“. The case concerns a Russian spy. Pavel Rubtsovposing as a Spanish journalist Pablo Gonzalez.
“Accuses have been made that in our country there was no freedom and pluralism of the media, citing the arrest of Pablo Gonzalez in 2022, which was then called 'independent journalist'” – Kamiński pointed out on the X website.
As the PiS politician pointed out, Gonzalez was one of the prisoners included in the “largest exchange since the end of the Cold War” between Russia and the West. “I demand an answer as to who was behind the repetition of this scandalous Russian narrative in the EC report.” – he added.
EC report on the rule of law in Poland. The case of Pablo Gonzalez
In the EC report from 2023 year it was indicated that “journalists continue to encounter difficulties in doing their job“. As explained, in February 2022, “Polish secret services they detained an independent journalist on charges of illegal espionage for Russia.”
The footnote explains that “independent journalist Pablo Gonzalez He was detained by Polish secret services in February 2022 in Rzeszów, where he was covering the refugee crisis triggered by the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine“. “He is accused of illegal espionage for Russia” – added.
What's more, the report stated that Press freedom organizations expressed “concern over the lack of evidence justifying the journalist's detention”.
Mariusz Kamiński assessed in the letter that “The EC did not notice structural problems of media ownership in Poland, which are largely controlled by people originating from the communist secret services and owned by foreign capital – mainly German”.
According to the MEP, the EC in the report “preferred to rely on false information provided by groups close to them, instead of trusting the institutions of the Polish state“. Kamiński asked who was behind the repetition of such a narrative, whether conclusions will be drawn from the “compromise” and is an apology planned.
Prisoner exchange. Kamiński pointed to Andrzej Poczobut
In early July, Ankara hosted the largest prisoner exchange between Russia and Western countries since the Cold War. The operation involved 24 people. Rubtsov/Gonzalez came to Russia from Poland as part of an exchange.
Mariusz Kaminskiwho was at the forefront in 2019-2023 Ministry of Interior and Administrationhe called the exchange “disgrace“. “I proposed to hand over to the Russians the GRU agent Pavel Rubtsov, who was arrested by us in February 2022 and used the name Pablo Gonzalez. Our condition for the prisoner exchange was to hand over Andrzej Poczobut to Poland.sentenced to Belarus to eight years in prison, and a Russian with a Polish Card, W., sentenced to 12 years in a labor camp for collaborating with Polish services,” he wrote.
“Tusk's Team gave the Russians their most valuable agent and got nothing in return” – he noted.
In response, the current head of the Ministry of Interior and Administration Tomasz Siemoniak he stated on TVN24 that “the PiS government did nothing to ensure Poczobut's release“.
