Mariusz Walter – “visionary, pioneer, master”. The first anniversary of the death of the co-founder of TVN

On December 13, 2022, we said goodbye to Mariusz Walter, one of the most important figures in the Polish media of the last several decades – former president of TVN, co-founder and co-owner of the ITI group. Mariusz Walter was 85 years old.

Mariusz Walter was born on January 4, 1937 in Lviv. In 1963, he started working at Telewizja Polska, where he remained until 1982. In the 1960s and 1970s, he became one of the most important people on television – he made, directed and wrote scripts for documentaries and programs.

In 1984, together with Jan Wejchert, they founded the ITI group. This cooperation led to the establishment of TVN in 1997, and in 2001 the first Polish news station in Poland – TVN24. Walter was the president of TVN until 2001, and he sat on the management board of ITI (TVN’s owner) until 2012.

Mariusz Walter was an erudite and a huge football fan. In 2001, he was awarded the Commander’s Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta.

Memories of Mariusz Walter

– He had an extraordinary touch with people. He created many journalism stars who are still with us on TVN – Kasia Kiela spoke about Walter, President & Managing Director of Warner Bros. Discovery in Poland and CEO of TVN. She emphasized that Walter was a “charismatic leader.” – He was an entrepreneur, but also an outstanding journalist who believed in the mission and role of independent journalism – recalled Kieli.

– From the first day I knew that I was working with an extraordinary man, a visionary, a pioneer, a master – Monika Olejnik, the host of “Kropka nad i” on TVN24, recalled Walter. – I remember meetings after programs in which Mariusz analyzed our work, the work of cinematographers, lighting engineers, producers, journalists – frame by frame, second by second, with passion and precision. He told us what to improve. He was extremely perfect, demanding, but also warm, she added.

In their memories, TVN journalists they wrote about what they owed to Walter. “He believed in me at the beginning, and later, he demanded and supported me. He looked after me. He monitored me. He called me and paid attention. Or he called me and praised me. And he always asked how I was doing,” wrote Anita Werner. “Television in Poland owes everything to him,” emphasized Katarzyna Kolenda-Zaleska.
