Grass burning may result in a fire, spread to the forest or buildings and pose a threat to people and animals. The police remind us that it may be considered a misdemeanor or even a crime.

The risk of burning grass is huge. “Fire is an element and we can never be sure that we will be able to control it. Please remember that in spring the grass is dry and burns very quickly. A moment of inattention, a stronger gust of wind or the terrain may cause a much larger fire” – they emphasize policemen.

An uncontrolled, wind-fed fire can easily spread to buildings or forest areas, causing large losses. Fire can also be dangerous for bystanders and those who start it.

“Meadows that are burned very often are located next to roads. Then the smoke can seriously reduce drivers' visibility, which creates an additional threat” – they add.

SEE: High fine and even imprisonment for 10 years. Poles burn grass on a massive scale anyway.

It is also not ecological. “Contrary to erroneous assessment, burning does not fertilize the soil, but on the contrary leads to its sterilization. Grass fires also cause havoc for flora and fauna. Bird nesting places and animal habitats are destroyed,” the police explain. They add that burning grass is also a threat to larger individuals, who become disoriented in the thick smoke and may crouch.

Misdemeanor or crime

Burning grass is illegal. It may be considered a misdemeanor, punishable by imprisonment for up to 30 days, a fine of up to PLN 5,000 or a reprimand.

SEE: Burning grass is pointless. It also causes great losses.

However, if such an action is classified as a crime, the punishment may be much more serious. This is punishable by up to 10 years in prison. However, if someone suffers or dies in a fire, the Penal Code provides for a penalty of up to 12 years in prison.

Officers appeal for common sense. “Before you set fire, consider whether you will endanger your life and the lives of others,” they add.
