More than 450 kg of dead fish were collected in the Gliwice Canal on June 10, the Ministry of Climate and Environment announced on Saturday. The resort said that the likely cause is a sharp drop in the oxygen content in the water, and that the tests did not indicate the presence of “golden algae”. It was assured that the services explain the cause of the fish’s death.

“On June 10, over 450 kg of dead fish were collected in the Gliwice Canal. The probable cause is a sharp decrease in the oxygen content in the water. In some places, it dropped to 45 percent. The cause of the rapid decrease in oxygen in the water will be clarified by the services” – the Ministry of Climate announced on Saturday and Environment.

They do not show the presence of “golden algae”

The ministry argued that the research of the Chief Inspectorate for Environmental Protection (GIOŚ) of June 7, “implemented as part of intervention monitoring, does not indicate the presence of golden algae”. “The tests also do not indicate the presence of toxins released by the alga in the water” – it was added, ensuring that the Environmental Protection Inspectorate took samples for analysis.

Research on the Oder

On June 7, the Ministry of Climate and Environment announced in a communication that from July 26, 2022 to May 15, 2023, nearly 57,000 analyzes were carried out in connection with the activities of the Central Research Laboratory of the Chief Inspectorate of Environmental Protection on the Oder River. As stated, samples are taken twice a week (Monday and Thursday) at 27 measurement and control points on the Odra River and 9 automatic stations.

The Ministry of Culture and Environmental Protection announced that one of the interventions on the Oder River is to neutralize the bloom of golden algae or at least control its development. “Such activities were carried out at the end of May 2023 in the Gliwice Canal, and earlier protective nets appeared in oxbow lakes to prevent fish from entering the places of golden algae bloom” – it was written.

From May 30, the resort provides data on the automatic monitoring of the Oder River on the gov.pl/odra website. This is a pilot system where various types of probes are tested – both floating and anchored on hydrotechnical devices.
