In 7-8 days I will present the composition of the new Council of Ministers and the decision of the Sejm will determine whether a new government will be formed – said Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki after an informal meeting of European Union leaders in Zagreb.
During a statement to the press after Thursday’s informal meeting of some EU government leaders in Zagreb, the Prime Minister was asked whether he would “go to the December summit” of the European Council.
– We’ll see. The process of forming a government is, of course, ongoing. In 7-8 days I will present the composition of the new Council of Ministers and the decision of the Sejm will determine whether a new government will be formed or not – said Morawiecki.
Morawiecki with the mission of forming a government
On Monday, the president Andrzej Duda accepted the resignation of the Council of Ministers, which will continue to perform its duties until a new government is appointed, and then – in accordance with previous declarations – designated Mateusz Morawiecki as prime minister.
The president made such a decision despite the declarations of the Civic Coalition, Third Way and the Left to form a coalition. The current democratic opposition can count on 248 out of 460 seats in the new Sejm, and PIS – on 194.
14 days to present the composition of the government and 14 days for an exposé and obtaining a vote of confidence
The President appoints the Prime Minister together with the other members of the Council of Ministers within 14 days from the date of the first sitting of the Sejm or the acceptance of the resignation of the previous Council of Ministers and takes the oath from the members of the newly appointed Council of Ministers.
According to the constitution, within 14 days of his appointment, the Prime Minister presents the government’s program of activities to the Sejm along with a motion for a vote of confidence. The Sejm passes a vote of confidence by an absolute majority of votes in the presence of at least half of the statutory number of Deputies.
