“Meal at school and at home” program – changes from the beginning of 2023

Since the beginning of 2023, higher income criteria have been in force to qualify for assistance from the “Meal at school and at home” program. – The changes will allow to provide support, inter alia, in the form of a meal and food products, to a larger group of people – explained the head of the family and social policy department, Marlena Maląg.

December 28, 2022 the Council of Ministers adopted an amendment to the resolution on the establishment of a long-term government program “Meal at school and at home” for the years 2019-2023. The changes concern the elevation income criterion entitling you to use support from 150 percent. up to 200 percent criterion (referred to in Article 8 of the Social Welfare Act).

The program “Meal at school and at home” – changes from the new year

Pursuant to the resolution, assistance under the program will be provided to people with low incomes, whose income does not exceed: PLN 1,552 – for a person running a household alone (previously, it was PLN 1,164) and PLN 1,200 – for a person in a family (previously PLN 900).

The resolution entered into force on January 1, 2023.

– These changes will allow to provide wider access and support to a larger group of people who need help in the form of e.g. a meal, food products or a cash benefit for the purchase of a meal or food. In addition, the program will co-finance the delivery of meals to people who do not leave home due to old age or disability, who are unable to prepare a meal themselves. These people very often apply for food aid – pointed out the Minister of Family and Social Policy Marlena Maląg.

The “Meal at school and at home” program for the years 2019-2023 provides assistance to both the elderly, disabled, low-income people and children who grow up in families in a difficult situation. An important element of the program is providing children and teenagers of school age with a hot meal prepared in the school canteen.

The program is financed from the state budget and own resources of local government units. The total amount of funds from the state budget provided for throughout the program implementation period is PLN 2.75 billion – PLN 550 million annually.
