Iran and Saudi Arabia have agreed to resume diplomatic relations broken off in 2016 and reopen their embassies in Tehran and Riyadh, Reuters reported. She added, citing state-run Iranian and Saudi media, that this was the result of tripartite talks held in Beijing.

Saudi Arabia and Iran confirmed that they would respect each other’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, refrain from interfering in each other’s internal affairs, and restore a number of bilateral agreements, in particular the 2001 Security Cooperation Agreement and the Agreement on Economic, Trade Relations and investment from 1998. The embassies in Riyadh and Tehran should reopen within two months, according to information provided by Reuters.

The Iranian and Saudi diplomats are expected to meet soon. The ministers will determine the conditions for taking up diplomatic missions by the ambassadors of both countries.

Authorities in Tehran and Riyadh thanked China for efforts to normalize Iranian-Saudi relations, and also Iraq and Oman for organizing negotiations between conflicting states in these countries in 2021-22.

Tensions between Saudi Arabia and Iran

Saudi Arabia severed diplomatic ties with Iran after attacks on its embassy in Tehran and consulate in Mashhad in January 2016. The attack was carried out by groups of people protesting against the execution of 47 people by the authorities in Riyadh, including the Shiite cleric Nimr al-Nimr.

In the following years, Sunni Saudi Arabia and Shia Iran competed with each other during the civil wars in Yemen and Syria, where they supported the opposing sides of the conflict, Reuters reminded.
