The Memphis, Tennessee SCORPION Police Department, which included the officers involved in the fatal beating of Tyre Nichols, was disbanded Saturday. The case of the death of the 29-year-old aroused a wave of indignation in the USA and led to protests in American cities.

Tire Nichols, 29, died on January 10, three days after being brutally arrested by five black police officers in Memphis, Tennessee. They were charged with second-degree murder.

“It was in everyone’s best interest to permanently shut down the SCORPION (Street Crimes Operation to Restore Peace in Our Neighborhoods) unit,” the Memphis Police Department said in a statement Saturday. It states that the SCORPION officers agreed to it “without reservations”. SCORPION has been inactive since Nichols’ arrest on January 7.

According to CBS News, citing police sources, “Crime fighting teams patrolled in groups and sometimes made reasonable stops on the roads to spot violent criminals, drugs or weapons.”

“While the actions of a few individuals dishonor SCORPION, it is imperative that we, the Memphis Police Department, take proactive steps in the healing process necessary for all,” the statement said.

He died after police intervention

In the four recordings released on January 7, cameras on police officers’ uniforms showed police officers pulling Nichols out of his car and pinning him to the ground. The man does not resist at first, but later slips out of the hands of the officers and runs away. He is then captured, and the five policemen take turns beating him, kicking him in the head, punching him, batoning him, and tasing him with a taser. Nichols, 29, was lying on the ground calling for his mother.

The victim was hospitalized in critical condition and died three days later from his wounds.
