Hamlin, who led the race for six laps, stated on his podcast that he had a giant alternative to win till the ultimate pitstop cycle, when he pitted from a top-five place with 23 laps to go along with Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota team-mate Martin Truex Jr.

The plan was for them to rejoin in tandem, however Truex wanted a lot much less gasoline to get the tip and exited the pits too far forward of Hamlin to draft instantly. In the meantime, their rivals pitted in better numbers and gained a lot time on their out-laps that the Toyota duo was dumped to the rear of the sphere.

Truex and Hamlin completed 15th and 17th respectively.

“This race is simply turning into increasingly more unpredictable each single 12 months,” stated Hamlin. “It’s so exhausting to cross in these Subsequent Gen vehicles on superspeedways, the racing was two-by-two, so that you simply can’t go to the again of the pack at any level and are available again, particularly in direction of the tip of the race.

“I got here out from the final pitstop in 18th and I mainly advised Chris [Gabehart, crew chief] ‘we’re ****ed’ – I had nowhere to go. [Before that] I assumed I used to be within the place I wanted to be, I used to be seventh and first non-Ford. So the final pitstop cycle occurs and we simply… I feel we tousled. A handful of Fords pitted, actually 5, after which me and Truex pitted by ourselves. I feel we ****ed up.

“Truex had seven extra laps of gasoline than I did, so let’s say that’s a second and a half lower than I must pack my gasoline cell full to get to the tip. He got here in behind me and we needed to take a certain quantity of gasoline, let’s say it was 5 seconds of gasoline.

“Truex solely wanted in all probability three seconds of gasoline, so he comes off pit highway two seconds forward of me, and the time we misplaced not being bumper to bumper leaving the pit highway, that’s one other two seconds of detriment – as a result of we’re drafting as quickly as we go away pit highway. You possibly can lose two seconds round that out-lap in case you’re not bumper to bumper.

“Add that to the 2 seconds misplaced on pitlane, that took me from seventh or eighth to mainly final. I used to be screwed at that time. That was a key, key second.”

Hamlin stated that shock race winner Ricky Stenhouse Jr. achieved the alternative development within the last spherical of stops, leaving him effectively positioned to make the most of the double additional time end to win his first Daytona 500.

“Ricky was 20th when the [final] inexperienced flag stops began, so not a great place,” Hamlin defined. “However he executed very well, he moved himself up the Chevy line by moving into and off pit highway effectively, and the Chevys ran longer, so that they didn’t want as a lot gasoline to the end, and so they pitted with the majority of vehicles so that they linked up faster.

“Chevy gained the technique sport, for my part.”
