As photojournalists gathered at the entrance to this year’s Met Gala, waiting for the arrival of the last invited star – Rihanna – their attention was stolen by an unexpected guest. A large cockroach appeared on the red carpet and started running up the front stairs. His arrival became an Internet hit.
Rihanna was the last of the stars invited to the Met Gala 2023. Just before the singer’s arrival, however, the attention of those waiting was caught by the unexpected appearance of someone completely different on the red carpet – a large cockroach. The insect ran down the middle of the Metropolitan Museum of Art steps, quickly climbing the steps. The appearance of the cockroach met with a lively reaction from people standing nearby, and its “run” was recorded by reporters present on the spot.
Cockroach at the Met Gala 2023
The insect quickly became a real hit on social media. The video of him walking up the museum steps in just eight hours has been viewed more than 5 million times. “He stole the show,” one Twitter user commented. “He came there to make sure that no one forgot that the gala is in New York,” wrote another Internet user, referring to the widespread occurrence of cockroaches in this agglomeration.
Variety magazine even posted a series of posts on social media about the cockroach’s “visit”. One of the published photos shows a smiling Kevin Mazur – a photojournalist who managed to immortalize him up close. As you can learn from the posts, however, the life of the insect did not last long. “It is with the deepest sadness that we report that Met Gali’s cockroach has been stepped on. Rest in peace,” Variety jokingly wrote.
Met Gala 2023
The Costume Institute Gala, known more widely as the Met Gala, has been organized since 1948. According to tradition, the event takes place every first Monday in May. Every year, the event attracts dozens of stars to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. The hosts of this year’s edition of the Met Gala were: Penélope Cruz, Michaela Coel, Roger Federer, Dua Lipa and Anna Wintour, and its leitmotiv was the work of Karl Lagerfeld. The event was the inauguration of the exhibition “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty”, which featured over 150 works by the legendary German designer.
Over the decades of his career, Lagerfeld has created for Pierre Balmain, Jeanne Patou, Chloé, Krizia, Ballantyne, Cadette, Charles Jourdan and Mario Valentino. From 1967, he was associated with the Italian fashion house Fendi, and in 1983 he took over the helm of the then failing Chanel house, which he turned into one of the most recognizable luxury brands. He was also the owner of the original brand Karl Lagerfeld. The designer died in 2019.
