The water temperature in the Adriatic Sea on the Croatian coast has been regularly reaching almost 30 degrees Celsius this summer. Experts are warning of the long-term consequences of such warming. “The situation will worsen, and we will quickly become the Red Sea,” warned meteorologist Duszko Kraljev.

Croatia is facing another heat wave, forcing people to seek refreshment in the sea. However, this will not always be a good solution, because the water temperature is also alarmingly high this year – notes N1 television.

On Thursday morning in Pula in northern Croatia the water temperature was 29 degrees Celsius, and in Rovinj 28 degrees C was recorded. Only in a few places in the country did the sea temperature drop below 27 degrees that day. Meanwhile, in July, the highest sea temperature in Croatia's history was recorded near Dubrovnik. On July 15, the water in the vicinity of this city reached exactly 29.7 degrees Celsius. The previous record from July 2015 was 29.5 degrees Celsius and came from the vicinity of the island of Rab.

“The situation will get worse”

According to meteorologists, this summer the temperature in the Croatian part of the Adriatic will be three to five degrees higher than usual. Experts warn that the warming will have a negative impact on marine flora and fauna in the long term.

– The situation on the Croatian coast will deteriorate, which will quickly turn us into the Red Sea (located between Africa and the Arabian Peninsula – ed.), where the sea temperature remains at 30 degrees Celsius all year round – said Croatian meteorologist Duszko Kraljev, commenting on another heat wave this season.
