An SUV containing the bodies of two elderly women from Arizona was found on the side of a highway in the Mexican state of Sonora, which borders the United States. Both had been shot to death, the local prosecutor's office said Friday. The search for the perpetrators is ongoing.
State prosecutors said the victims were two women, ages 72 and 82. Their bodies were found with gunshot wounds in an overturned white Nissan Pathfinder about 10:30 a.m. Friday.
The women had dual citizenship – American and Mexican – Reuters reports, citing a source in local services.

The bodies were found on a stretch of highway between the Arizona border towns of Sonoyta and Caborca, an area known for violence and migrant trafficking. Both women were from Caborca, prosecutors said in a statement.
Near the crime scene, National Guard officers found a navy blue Ford F-150 that had been reported stolen, as well as an AK-47 rifle and ammunition.

“Security forces immediately launched an operation to locate and arrest the criminal group responsible, with the support of specialized air and land forces,” Sonora state prosecutors said.
