Mexico. Nelson Matus is dead, Mexican journalist shot dead in Acapulco

Mexican journalist Nelson Matus was shot dead Saturday in the coastal resort of Acapulco in the southwestern state of Guerrero. This information was reported by the local media.

Nelson Matus, director of the local news site Lo Real de Guerrero, was shot dead in his car in a store parking lot, Mexican newspaper El Universal reported.

Journalist shot dead in Mexico

According to the Mexican newspaper Reforma, the attack took place after 3 p.m. local time in the Emiliano Zapata district in northern Acapulco. The newspaper added that Matus survived two assassination attempts in 2017 and 2019.

Matus’ death came a week after police found the body of the abducted and murdered Luis Martin Sanchez, a journalist for the Mexican newspaper La Jornada. Two messages were attached to Sanchez’s chest, but authorities have not released their contents.

According to a report by the international organization Reporters Without Borders, nearly 150 journalists have been murdered in Mexico since 2000.
