A strong earthquake occurred on Thursday evening in the afternoon local time (evening in Poland) in central Mexico. It was felt in the country’s capital.
The earthquake had a magnitude of 5.8, the national seismological institute reported. According to the American geological agency USGS, the epicenter was near the town of Chiautla de Tapia in the state of Puebla, almost 200 kilometers south of the capital Mexico City.
As a result of the tremors, the alarm system was activated throughout the city. Witnesses reported that buildings shook. People started leaving their homes and businesses in a hurry.
The capital’s authorities said there were no reports of damage.
