Six women who went missing in early March in the central Mexico city of Celaya were murdered, prosecutors said on Friday, adding that the charred remains of five of them had been identified. The police have no doubt that the sixth was also a victim of homicide.

Prosecutor Carlos Zamarripa said six suspects had been arrested in connection with the gruesome case. During the arrest, firearms, bullets, drugs and telephone equipment were confiscated. Ballistics analysis has linked the weapon to various executions, Mexican media reported.

– We are clear about the circumstances in which they (the victims – ed.) were initially deprived of their freedom, and then their lives. This is a very serious crime and its perpetrators must be brought to justice,” Prosecutor Zamarripa said.

Investigators are trying to determine the motive of the crime and its exact course.

The remains of women have been found

The women, aged 19 to 48, went missing on March 7. Their relatives reported them missing to the police. The remains of the women were found 30 km from the city of Celaya, where they were last seen.

The state of Guanajuato, where Celaya is located, has for many years been the scene of bloody clashes between criminal groups Santa Rosa de Lima and the Jalisco New Generation Cartel, which fight for influence and profits from drug trafficking and stolen fuel.

Experts are working on identifying more burnt bone fragments.

Violence in Mexico

A wave of violence has swept across Mexico for many years. According to official figures, there were 31,936 homicides in the country last year alone. 3,754 victims are women.

Agencies will emphasize that the real number of homicides, including women, is much higher.
