Donald Trump uttered imprudent and unwise words – said General Mieczysław Bieniek, social advisor to the Minister of Defense, in “Fakty po Faktach”. The TVN24 interlocutor referred in this way to the former US president’s statement that he would “encourage” Russia to “do whatever it likes” with NATO countries that spend less than 2 percent of GDP on defense.

Asked about his statement candidate for US President Donald Trump, which were made during an election rally in South Carolina, Mieczysław Bieniek replied that these were imprudent and unreasonable words. – They were even condemned by some Republicans – he said.

Bieniek said that “you don’t say such words uses.” – They were widely echoed in European capitals – said the interlocutor of “Fakty po Faktach”, recalling the statement of the Secretary General of the Alliance, Jens Stoltenberg, that NATO is a permanent and indivisible alliance.

– Next year we will celebrate the 75th anniversary of the Alliance, which since its establishment has proven its usefulness and effectiveness despite turbulence – said Bieniek. – The Alliance has shown that it can adapt to new situations and is able to prevent crises – he added.

Poland tops the list

The TVN24 interlocutor reminded that, on the other hand, there is still a discussion that NATO members should spend two percent of GDP on their defense.

Jens Stoltenberg said Wednesday that 18 allies would meet that requirement.

Currently, Poland is at the top of the list of countries that have no problems meeting this criterion. Our expenses for this purpose are estimated at 3.9%. GDP.

Bieniek, when asked whether this was a reason to be proud, whether Poland should spend more on defense and whether the current level of spending is rational, replied. – This is a very high level. In real cash it is PLN 119 billion (PLN – editor’s note) for the current year and approximately PLN 40 billion (PLN – editor’s note) from the Armed Forces Support Fund. This is almost PLN 150 billion. This money must be spent very rationally.

“We have many things in common”

Bieniek also said that the current team of the Ministry of Defense, headed by Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz, is doing everything to ensure that this money is spent rationally, to fulfill the obligations that have already been undertaken and to – as he stated – technical modernization program (covering the years 2021- 2035 – ed.) was implemented according to priorities and what will be included in the national security strategy and documents that will be issued soon. The general reminded that there are obligations in the Alliance, but NATO countries also benefit from membership in this organization. – We get some kind of protection from the Alliance. For example, anti-missile system, anti-aircraft system, joint reconnaissance and target detection systems. We have many elements in common. And let us remember that NATO also creates many joint projects – emphasized the guest of “Fakty po Faktach”.
