A condensation funnel appeared on Wednesday over the Baltic Sea in the area of Mielno (West Pomeranian Voivodeship). The beginning of the waterspout was captured in photos.

A waterspout is a type of tornado that occurs when much cooler air flows over a relatively warm body of water. The instability created allows air particles to rise quickly, causing cumulonimbus clouds to form. A vertical, funnel-shaped vortex connected to the cloud is formed above the water surface.

As tvnmeteo.pl forecaster Daniel Kowalczyk explained, on Wednesday there are conditions at the seaside that favor the formation of such phenomena. – Storm clouds developed along the coastline, creating a linear structure stretching on the border of water and land, from the vicinity of Mielno to Ustki – added.

On Monday, there will be showers along the coast. According to the Institute of Meteorology and Water Management in Pomerania, they are also possible storms.

Waterspout – what is it?

A waterspout has a much weaker force than a whirlwind. The former is largely transparent and in the initial phase it can only be noticed thanks to the trace it leaves on the water surface. Most waterspouts disintegrate when they reach land.
