Members of the group “Medycy na border” on Tuesday night helped a group of several dozen migrants who found themselves in the Podlasie forest outside the zone of emergency. – We did not manage to reach them by ambulance, for forty minutes we walked through the forest with all the equipment – said the doctor Kaja Filaczyńska, who in “Fakty po Faktach” told about the details of the action.
Migrants are still trying to cross the border with Belarus to Poland. According to the data of the Border Guard, on Wednesday the guards recorded 600 attempts to illegally cross the Polish-Belarusian border. As added, 19 immigrants were detained, including 16 Iraqi nationals, two Indian nationals and one Syrian national. The Border Guard said that the remaining attempts were prevented by Border Guard officers.
On Tuesday night, members of the “Medycy na Granicy” group helped a group of several dozen migrants, including children and pregnant women, staying in the Podlasie forest outside the state of emergency. On Wednesday, the group published an entry on Facebook in which it described the situation related to the action it carried out in the Podlaskie Voivodeship.
A doctor about the action of the group “Medycy na border”
Kaja Filaczyńska, a doctor from the group “Medycy na Granicy”, talked about the details of the action in Thursday’s “Facts po Faktach”. – It was 30 people, including 16 children, whom our team helped for six hours in the middle of the night. We did not manage to reach them by ambulance, for forty minutes we walked through the forest with all the equipment, hot water, thermos flasks, food and clothes for them – she said.
– Our task is to provide medical assistance. When we heard that people were dying in Polish forests due to cold and hypothermia, it was our ethical duty to go and help them. We see little children spending the night in the cold. We are a medical and humanitarian organization and we do what we know about, she noted.
As she said, “what is particularly frustrating for us in recent days and for this reason we feel very helpless is that our base is several hundred meters from the border of the state of emergency”. – We know that behind this line there are a lot of people who need help, who may be in a state of immediate health and life threat. We have the equipment, we have the skills, we know how to help them, but we cannot cross this line – she added.
Denied entry to the area of emergency
When asked whether her group asked the authorities for permission to enter the state of emergency, Filaczyńska explained that “we communicated through the official route”. – On September 24, 21 people sent a letter to the minister [Mariusza Kamińskiego –red.] asking for permission to enter. We argued that we were ready to cooperate with the Border Guard, that we would organize everything legally, equipment and an ambulance ourselves. We only need consent, she reported. As she added, four days later the medics received a negative answer.
– Then we sent a letter to the Border Guard. We also received a negative answer – she said. As she added, the group requested mediation from the Primate of Poland, Archbishop Wojciech Polak. – He expressed his support for our initiative in a letter. He decided that it was scandalous that there was no such agreement yet, so we hope that the Ministry will sit down with us for talks to determine the conditions under which we can enter the zone – she said.
– As a doctor, I know one thing – there are people we can help, we know how to do it. These are children, whole families, pregnant women who are hungry, exhausted, have nothing to drink. It is unacceptable that in the 21st century such living circumstances put people in a direct threat to their lives, she added.
